Hi again! There are so many things that I want to share with you. It feels like I’m having a conversation with a friend that I get to continue with each new blog post 😉 Please feel free to respond! BTW, we finally have hot water and WiFi, and I’m so happy!

A NEW BOOK

So I’ve just finished reading a book called Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, by Peter Scazzero, recommended by fellow missionary/friend Hillary, who lives nearby. Thanks again Hill!

One thing that stood out to me was his explanation of “Sabbath rest.” I never really understood exactly what that was about, or if we New Testament believers were even supposed to participate in a sabbath. The way Peter described it made it seem like a dream! Or a mini vacation!

I thought “YES, I want to do this every week”. To work a bit harder on Saturday, so that I can “rest” on Sunday by reading a book, going for a walk, spending purposeful time with my family… and NOT cleaning all day. Yes, please! Even spending some time in prayer or worship or both.

Peter gives an illustration of two families going on a long trip. One family wants to observe the Sabbath and one does not, they just want to press forward. Guess who arrived at their destination first? Yes, the family who observed the Sabbath. Why? Because they were rested and had the strength to go further on traveling days.

“We don’t work for the Sabbath, the Sabbath works for us.”

I was so excited about purposefully enjoying the day and resting. On Saturdays, I’m doing a little extra work and cooking a meal for us to eat on Sundays. So far, I can’t seem to not do any work at all on Sunday… as there are always dishes… but, at least 6 hours of my day is filled with purposeful rest. I hope to get to a full 12 hours some day!

To go along with Emotionally Healthy Spiritually, there is a Day by Day book that provides a 40 day journey in the “daily offices”. Which just means taking time, at least twice a day, to spend with the Lord. If you end up getting either of these books or have already read them, I would love to know your thoughts.

  1. I have read those books also. We led our church small groups through the 6 week program the author offers. We found it quite helpful.

  2. Thanks for recommending! There is a lot of evidence out there supporting the benefits of a regular “Sabbath” in our lives. Probably because it’s hard not to give up that perception that we are “controlling things” for a period of time. But we have to take our hands off the levers in order to rest daily and weekly.
